What is Rotary Cooler
The rotary cooler, which is a kind of cooler, is a cylinder type high efficiency rotating cooler.
It is a furnace in which raw material is put into a rotary cylinder made of steel and directly cooled or indirectly cooled. It is mainly used to cool the product after chemical reaction or physical change by treating the material at high temperature.
A large cylinder is laid horizontally at a somewhat inclined angle, and the raw material is sent from above while rotating it. The raw material is rotated by gravity along a slight slope, moving downward, exhausted from the bottom to the outside, and cooled by external cooling water or coolant from the cylinder. The most important technology in the rotary cooler is cooling temperature, residence time, tilting angle according to the material properties of customer’s needs. Especially, maximizing the heat transfer between the material and the refrigerant to increase the cooling efficiency requires a skillful engineer and construction worker. Making rotary cooler is one of the most important items required long experience and technology. Types according to cooling method
Rotary coolers are classified as direct cooling or indirect cooling coolers depending on the cooling method. It can be selected considering which process is more suitable. Direct cooling method has advantage of high cooling efficiency and is dependent on the direct contact between the material and the cooling air. However, materials that can be oxidized or burned due to cooling air must be handled carefully in a controlled environment. In addition, there is a risk of contamination due to direct treatment, so indirect cooling is preferred rather than direct cooling. Indirect cooling system is designed to complement environmental factors of the direct cooling system and cooling the material outside the furnace. Although the cooling efficiency is lower than that of the direct cooling method, the inflow of the fine material can be controlled and the temperature can be controlled accurately

Rotary coolers are often used with rotary kilns. Commonly used field is limestone processing for raw material firing to produce cement. Recently, coolers have been used for rare earth smelting to make ore as raw material. It is also used for the recycling of waste and sewage sludge and fertilizer production.
